Earth Day 2009
NIH Goes Greener!

10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the front lawn of Building 1
Purchase lunch or bring your own
NIH Earth Day will be a celebration with activities and information for NIH employees, contractors, visitors, and children here for Take Your Child to Work Day.

This is an NIH Zero Waste Event! All waste will be composted or recycled rather than thrown away.
Lunch from local vendors, or bring your own.
Bring used bikes for "Bikes for the World" and old cell phones and eyeglasses for collection.
Children's activities:
- Learn about the environment and how to protect it
- Meet Ben Franklin, the Mad Hatter, and there will be face painters
- Dign up for wetland classes

- Take part in the 3-D watershed demonstrations
Activities for Everyone:
- Find out the top ten ways you can go green at home and at work - take home a native tree seedling that you can plant as one greener step
- Join a nature walk and learn what the NIH has done to restore its stream and the role that it plays in the overall health of our Chesapeake Bay Watershed
- Learn about the Green Roof on the NIH Visitors Center
- Bring a plant and swap with your fellow employees at the plant swap
- Visit the Montgomery County Recycling display for information and handouts on their recycling program
- Learn how to leave your car at home through NIH’s Transhare program, Montgomery County Commuter Connections, and vanpool opportunities
- Bike to work and come visit other bikers at the NIH Bicycle Commuter Club table – remember Bike to Work Day is May 16th
- Have your tires checked for air pressure and tread wear from 7:30 am - 9:15 am
- Learn about endangered plants and their medicinal properties
Don't forget that we are working to protect our planet every day, not just Earth Day!

Earth Week at NIH
Monday, April 20th: Start out the week by learning about NIH’s commuting options by visiting NIH’s Transhare Program Web site at: http://dtts.ors.od.nih.gov/transhare.htm
Tuesday, April 21st: Wendy Rieger from NBC News Channel 4 will be speaking on “Going Green” from 11 a.m. – noon in Lipsett Auditorium, Building 10. Immediately following this presentation, there will be a guided walk to the NIH Library where there will be a Ribbon Cutting for the New Green Terrace.
Wednesday, April 22nd: Almost everything commonly generated at NIH is recyclable. Do you know what is? Brush up on our latest recycling options and you’ll be surprised how little needs to go in the trash.
Thursday, April 23rd: Participate in the NIH Earth Day Celebration 10am - 2pm in front of Building 1.
Friday, April 24th: Spring is the perfect time for green gardening. Don’t forget to plant the native tree seedling you picked up at NIH Earth Day! |
